Editorial: New bill could enhance communication with state PDF Print E-mail

Proposed Connecticut State Senate Bill “An Act Concerning Student Tuition at Public Colleges” would require all state universities’ boards of trustees to appear before the General Assembly’s Joint Standing Committee prior to enacting tuition changes, a perfectly fair request considering the input the state has on UConn’s affairs through the funding it provides. Currently, university officials must only provide information upon lawmakers’ request.

The proposal would directly impact the University of Connecticut. It would formalize the flow of information between the University of Connecticut’s Board of Trustees and the state legislature’s higher education committees, compelling legislators and university officials to communicate face to face about tuition changes. Doing so would allow lawmakers to understand the Board of Trustees’ actions before news becomes public.
