Malloy gets final approval for Jackson Lab investment PDF Print E-mail

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy secured Connecticut's investment in a major genetic research initiative Monday -- but not before one more partisan debate.

The State Bond Commission voted 8-2 to release $291 million, which will pay to build a new 173,000-square-foot research center for The Jackson Laboratory on the University of Connecticut Health Center campus in Farmington. The funds also will provide equipment and furniture for the facility, and will subsidize roughly one-third of operating costs for the next decade.

The University of Connecticut took a remarkable step this month after a special review board concluded that a researcher there had fabricated data: Rather than issuing vague statements or simply declining comment, as other universities have in cases of possible misconduct by their scholars, UConn put forth a 49-page account that spells out what it believes researcher Dipak Das did wrong.

In doing so, the university provided a factual basis for dismissal proceedings, which are now underway; beyond that, UConn made it possible for outsiders to form their own opinions about the school’s actions - and the soundness of Das’s research. It also provided a model for other research institutions about how to set the scientific record straight.

UConn’s Tuition and Fee Plan PDF Print E-mail

All great universities continuously evolve. The University of Connecticut is, of course, no exception. With an eye on expanding our own capacity for exceptional teaching and research over the coming years, UConn recently adopted a plan that will assist us in boosting our faculty numbers by nearly 300 by fiscal year 2016.

Approved by our University Board of Trustees last month, this four-year plan will also benefit our students in new ways, helping them access the courses they need to complete their degree and reducing their time to graduation. Under the four-year tuition and fee plan, the total cost of attending UConn – including tuition, fees, room, and board – will increase by about 4.5 percent over each of the next four years.
